What is Motor Planning?

Motor planning is the ability to plan and perform the steps needed to complete physical actions.

It basically involves your brain and muscles working together to generate movements such as brushing your hair, putting on your shoes, and climbing the stairs among many, many others.

For children confronting challenges with motor planning, here are some hints that could help:

  1. Once the activity is identified, break it down in small steps.

  2.  Use visual and/or auditory aids (i.e., pictures, musical toys/devices) to engage your child with the desired movement.

  3.  Use simple verbal cues (i.e., go, stop, up, down) when promoting the activity.

  4.  Use a mirror for your child to look at his/her own movement patterns in real time and make adaptations as needed.

  5.  Practice, practice, practice and do not get discouraged!
