Head Of Class Award Recipients

Written By: Katie Folsom

UCP West Orange is an inclusive learning environment for students of all abilities. This environment allows our team to provide educational services, therapy services, family support, and enrichment all in a centralized location. Our school allows children from all academic backgrounds and levels to reach their full potential – including students who are on a gifted or accelerated academic path.

With our smaller staff to student ratios and robust instructional program, we customize learning to meet each of our students’ individual needs whether it be for support or enrichment. Our students spend most of their learning time in small groups and in this way, we can meet each child where they are. Students are also encouraged to pass forward these skills by lending support and guidance to their classmates.

An Intervention Specialist along with multiple in-school tutors provide interventions for those that need additional support as well as enrichment for those who are achieving beyond their grade level peers.

UCP West Orange is excited to share some of the academic successes that we have seen in the 2025-2026 school year!

  • The UCP West Orange VPK Program earned a 6.06 CLASS score for the 2025-2026 school year. A CLASS (Classroom Assessment Scoring System) observation in VPK assesses the quality of teacher-child interactions. Programs evaluate three main domains: Emotional Support, Classroom Organization, and Instructional Support. The score received places the UCP West Orange VPK program in a “Excellent” rating. Out of 650 childcare centers that were evaluated, only 22 were awarded Head of Class and an Excellent rating.

  • Pre-K saw a 31% increase in proficiency in the STAR Early Literacy assessment from the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year to the end.

  • Kindergarten-2nd Grade saw a 2.33% increase in proficiency in the STAR Math assessment from the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year to the end.

  • 2nd Grade saw an 11% increase in proficiency in the STAR ELA/Reading assessment from the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year to the end.

  • 3rd-5th Grade saw a 7% increase in proficiency in the FAST Reading assessment and a 23% increase in proficiency in the FAST Math assessment from the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year to the end.

We are proud of the hard work that our students and educators have put in so that we could have these wonderful achievements. We are looking forward to the 2026-2027 school year and all the learning gains and achievements our students will continue to make.
