Finish Strong: Why Attendance Matters More Than Ever in the Last Month of School

Written By: Tania Villalón Rivera, Parent Engagement Coord, UCP Charter Schools

As the school year winds down, it can be tempting to ease up on routines. Warmer weather, end-of-year activities, and summer plans are right around the corner. But this final month of school is more important than it may seem, especially when it comes to attendance.

Every day still counts.

Why Attendance Matters at the End of the Year

The last few weeks of school are often filled with meaningful learning experiences. Teachers are:

  • Wrapping up key concepts

  • Reviewing and reinforcing important skills

  • Completing final projects and assessments

  • Celebrating growth and building classroom community

Missing even a few days can mean missing important instruction and opportunities to feel confident heading into the next grade level.

Consistency Builds Confidence

When students attend regularly, they stay connected to their learning, their teachers, and their peers. This consistency helps:

  • Strengthen understanding of key skills

  • Build routines and responsibility

  • Support social connections and a sense of belonging

Ending the year with strong attendance helps students transition more smoothly into the next school year.

Attendance = Strong Finish

Think of the school year like a race. The final stretch is where students bring everything together. Showing up each day helps them:

  • Feel proud of finishing what they started

  • Stay engaged and motivated

  • Carry momentum into summer and beyond

How Families Can Support Strong Attendance

Here are a few simple ways to keep routines strong through the last month:

  • Keep a consistent schedule – Maintain regular sleep and wake times

  • Talk about the importance of finishing strong – Help your child understand why it matters

  • Stay connected with teachers – Reach out if challenges come up

  • Celebrate attendance wins – Acknowledge your child’s effort in showing up each day

A Time to Celebrate—and Stay Committed

The end of the year is full of celebrations, and your child deserves to be part of them. From classroom moments to final milestones, being present allows them to fully experience the joy of closing out the year with their peers.

Finishing strong isn’t just about academics, it’s about building habits, confidence, and pride.

Let’s make this last month count.
